Work in Canada

2With Canada’s decreasing birth rate comes the need to welcome more foreigners to Canada in order to help grow the Canadian workforce and economy. However, there are strict requirements in place in order for a foreign worker to obtain a temporary work permit. More often than not, a foreign worker will require a work permit in order to legally work in a Canadian job. Generally, the worker would need a job offer from a Canadian employer who has obtained a Labour Market Impact Assessment, more commonly known as a LMIA. Again, in certain cases, some workers are LMIA-exempt or do not require a work permit to engage in employment. In most cases, the temporary foreign worker can be accompanied by their spouse and dependent children and they too will be able to obtain a legal Canadian status which will allow them to live in Canada together.
So, where do we start?
The Temporary Foreign Worker Program is a program of support to Canadian employers when trying to fill gaps in the labour market. This is done through a rigorous process where the Canadian employer, together with IEK’s representation, prove to the Canadian Government (Service Canada) that there are no Canadian’s or Permanents to fill the position and that the only to overcome this labour shortage is by hiring a foreign worker.
LMIA
As mentioned, in most cases, the temporary foreign worker will need to be issued with a temporary work permit before being legally qualified to work in Canada. Before obtaining the work permit (the applicant will need to meet additional criteria to qualify for a work permit), the applicant will need to have their employer apply for a labour market impact assessment. In simple terms, this is an application which includes evidence that they have tried to hire Canadian’s or Permanent Residents to fill the vacancy, but that they were unsuccessful in doing so and in order to overcome the labour shortage, the foreign worker must be hired.

Study in Canada

Canada boasts one of the most world-renowned education systems globally and this attracts hundreds and thousands of students each year. Students and Graduates of programs from designated learning institutions receive many benefits from the Canadian Government, and in certain cases, options to work or even apply for Permanent Residence post-graduation.
So, who needs a Study Permit?
Before arriving in Canada, an applicant that wishes to study in Canada for 6 months or more, must apply for and be issued a Study Permit from IRCC. Please note there are exceptions to this rule for younger students and IEK Immigration Consulting Inc. encourages you to contact our office to find out more.
Can my family members accompany me?
Applicants can include minor children in their application. If a child is of school age, a study permit application for that child would need to be submitted. If the applicant has a spouse, the spouse of an international student is able to submit an application for a Spousal Open Work Permit.
Study Permit Refusals
A sad reality is that refusals of applications for study permits is on the rise and in some countries, more applications are refused than approved. A major positive though is that there are options available to applicants that have had their application refused and IEK Immigration Consulting Inc. may be able to assist you.
Contact IEK Immigration Consulting Inc. to find out more about applying for a study permit; the different types of study authorization in Canada; the options available to family members of the principal applicant; how a student can proceed to applying for a work permit or permanent residence post-graduation; and to enquire about overcoming previous study permit refusals.

Visit Canada

For some – Studying, Working, or applying for Permanent Residence in Canada is not an option. Other’s may hope to simply visit family; travel to Canada to experience all our amazing country has to offer; for a business meeting; or to study for less than 6 months. If an applicant is from a non-exempt visa country, these hopefully travelers would need to submit an application for a Visitor Visa, which also has it’s own criteria and eligibility that the applicant must meet.
Visitor Visa Types
Multiple Entry, which can be issued for up to 10 years at a time, depending on when the applicants passport expires. Having a multiple entry visitor visa valid for 10 years however does not allow the traveler to stay for 10 years.
Single Entry, which is good for a single entry to Canada
